Quake 2 SP Issue under XP Pro [SP2]

whenever ive tried to play quake 2 single player, i can only load game saves for so long before it starts whining about function pointers.

usually i can save/load wityhin the same session, but after quiting and restarting exe, i get the function pointer gripes from q2 console.

same problem when running with quake2max

anyone know wuts going on here?

    Q2 on WinXP

This is an update by me. I have since reinstalled windows xp for other reasons, but the "function pointers" problem persists. I reinstalled quake 2 after doing the windows xp reinstall, and restarted machine before launching the quake 2 executable. No luck.

After scouring the web for answers, I found a client called "Quake 2 : Evolved" and proceeded with installation of it [unzip sfx into quake2 folder] it supports only single player, but that is fine with me, because it [so far] seems to fix the func pointer problem.

Multiplayer under 'vanilla' quake 2 seems to run fine.

Here is url for Q2:E :

I hope this is helpfull to others suffering the same delima.

    Update

Recently, I tried to run Quake II:Evolved, and to my dismay, the Func Pointer problem came up again.

I thought to redownload Q2:E, but the link no longer appears valid, guess the guy didnt renew...

I download Quake2maX, which in the past didnt take care of the Func Pointer problem, but alas, I didnt know what els to do.

It seems to work thus far(ver .45), and I have been using it with Hi-Res textures, and weapons models.

Here is a page offering downloads to Q2:E, Quake2maX, and other sourceports for Quake2, as well as other FPSs.

RE: Quake 2 SP Issue under XP Pro [SP2]

Hello, i recently found this sourceport of quake2, it "ups" the gfx, makes things look "nicer", but most importantly [to me, anyway] is it works fine under Windows Vista [ive tested with vista, Service Pack 2], as soon as i test with XP [for those still using it], ill post a reply to report on it.

Also, this sourcport works for quake2 multiplayer as well.

here is url for sourceport "EGL"

RE: Quake 2 SP Issue under XP Pro [SP2]

I recently came upon this web page, and it includes many sourceports, and related items for quake 2, as well as other games.

Ive been using "Quake2XP", under windows xp[sp2], and save/load works great! [so far ive made it to "Outer Hanger"]

Ive also been using hi-res textures, and that is pretty kewl too.

Q2XP also adds "HL2-Transparency" like effects for liquids, and glass.

    Here is the link: http://fps.maros.pri.ee/index.php?event=610

[EDIT] - I just realized that this link, and one i posted before, look to be the same. I have chosen to leave things as they are, mostly because this "latest" link is working as of the time of this posting.
