SYMPTOMS
When you play a multiplayer game of Microsoft Halo: Combat Evolved, you may experience both of the following symptoms:
• When you use the keyboard to chat with other players, nothing appears in the chat window.
• When you kill another player, you see just "Player Name" over the crosshairs instead of "You killed Player Name."
CAUSE
This issue may occur if the Microsoft XML Parser files are not correctly installed.
To resolve this issue, use the following methods, as necessary, in the order that they appear in.
Method 1: Reinstall the Microsoft XML parser
1. Quit Halo: Combat Evolved.
2. Insert the Halo: Combat Evolved CD into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then hold down the SHIFT key to prevent the program from starting automatically.
3. Click Start, and then click Run.
4. In the Open box, type CD Drive:\Redist\msxmlenu.msi, and then click OK.
5. Follow the instructions to install the Microsoft XML Parser files.
In most cases you can just run the 'msxmlenu.msi' file located in your: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition\redist folder. Close Halo CE then open the folder and double click on the msxmlenu.msi. Start Halo CE and check to see that the text is working.
In some instances you may need to upgrade the files listed below: Some 256 MB video cards experience problems with Halo PC and/or Halo CE where you can play the game but can not see the text chat that you or others type.
In addition Microsoft has identified a potential incompatibility between Halo for PC and Windows XP SP2, on certain high-end video cards, which causes Halo to exit silently to the desktop immedately after launching the program, before the logo movies play.
There are two files DLL available to update your PC to possibly correct this issue: strings.dll - available here binkw32.dll - available here For a standard install, these files will be located in your 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom' Edition folder.
IMPORTANT Backup both files before updated to the new versions. If this does not correct the problem then remove then re-install Halo CE before installing these files.
If this does not work, and you have purchased halo legally, call microsoft, as they provide unlimited, FREE tech support for all their games.
