    This isnt an xfire problem

Despite XP not being in the Min specs for this reason, you will still be able to play the demo by copying the following file into your Miles directory and replacing the newer mssmp3.asi with the following older mssmp3.asi used in older games such as Call of Duty 2.

Note: Please only do this is you are using an XP version not a 64-bit and are having problems. Not needed for users not having this specific issue.

To do this, simply go to your install directory, where the game files are, now copy/paste this mssmp3.asi into the folder. It will prompt you letting you know this file already exists and asking if you want to replace it. Choose to replace it.

This should resolve the issue with Athlon 2600+ XP instead of 64-bit as the XP do not support the latest Miles version we're using.

This is how I fixed it; first, create a new profile, then exit out of COD4 then go to start-computer-my computer-find the activision folder-call of duty 4- profiles- (insert profile name). Copy mp data to your new profile, then you should have everything from you old profile and the mulitiplayer should work now.

    so frustrating

:? i think my error report is similar... most days i do not get it, but the last couple of days i get it for all the games i try to launch, I even tried exiting & logging out of xfire only to see xfire junk pop up regardless et try to launch... I did not have these issues before installing xfire a couple of weeks ago  today alone i dc ed over 20 times that is no exaggeration :/ my characters died in the crashes, made me lose money et time i had invested in leveling them i lost game points... sorry x fire i am gonna have to uninstall it looks like,as I really not need a launcher to begin with et all my friends/famille play same games so know where to find me.

you could also rename the miles folder or the mssmp3.asi. Renaming the miles folder to something like nomiles will stop the music playing and the "Your the last solider left" but everyother sound will be fine

    mssmp3.asi file errors

i was having the mssmp3.asi file error too , It was not an xfire problem its a file problem. All i had to do was change the last part of file name (mssmp3.asi) being" asi " TO " bak " make the file inert i guess ? warning this change may affect other sounds too like music before after and during game

And if those wont help, easy way to get cod4 working is put plug in to motherboards MIC place. That´s how i get cod4 working
I read some where that problem is motherboards own soundcard and that is the only way fix it.
Kaikkihan me puhalletaan täällä yhteen hiileen.... musta tuntuu että joku kusee siihen.

after i installed cod4 on my friend's machine, it showed the splash screen for a sec, then closed the game entirely without any errors (just closes for no reason?).

mssmp3.asi stuff did not help, nor the latest patch (1.7) or a dll that weren't in the system32 dir. OS was windows xp 32bit without SP (afaik).

so could it be the microphone?

cod4 didn't create the default config files yet, 'cause it always terminated.

The new fault. I've never had that, if I remember correctly. But the reinstall will certainly help
