Please think about what you're saying.

The Windows PC market is where the critical mass is, so that's where we're focusing our efforts. The linux game market bankrupted almost all of its game publishers as nobody actually paid for the games!!!! Look what happened to Loki. I know you may love Linux (many of us do too!) but if you were starting to grow a business you'd chose the platform that gave you the widest exposure and audience, and right now that's the Windows PC platform.

We will continue to focus our attentions on the PC windows space, and once we feel the windows Xfire has all the features and fuctionality we want, we might be able to start thinking about porting to other platforms.

Right now 95% + of the PC gaming market is using windows based PC's so that's where we're concentrating our efforts

95% is the correct for all computer gaming not just PC.

    Windows: 95%
    Mac: 4%
    *nix:1%

I can understand that windows is more popular for gaming and so is the main target.

    Did you publish the specification?
If so where can it be found?

    Thanks for quick reply.

IDsoftware for example releases its engine's source code for free and ports to linux, but you still have to buy the game files. That looks fair to me.

Steeling games is popular on Windows (all that torrent stuff) nothing to do with platforms.

I know many people which use linux and they need xfire. The developers release a little update every week to support one or two more games... nothing more... And they don't have time to develop a Linux or Mac client?

same prob here.... wanna delete my old windows system complete and xfire is one of the last features i just can't use under linux. there's an plug-in for gaim, but it's from a user who missed xfire under linux himself and totally outdated and poorely working

i know there are tools working the same way like xfire on linux, but the problem is, they just don't work under windows, so this or the other way round i can't use the feature to play with my friends and would really appreciate to see an xfire-client for linux soon

Hey software companies wake up please!

    * 95% = Windows so we only make a Windows client and dont even dare to look any further...

Ok, I understand that so you have a point but please consider this:

    - The best (high quality / stable / popular) programs I found are multiplatform. The only problem is you have to write good code to get it running on more platforms (hey isn't this what Xfire wants also, just a rock solid application ...).

Just to name a few: Firefox, Skype, Apache, MySQL, Unreal Tournament, DOOM, Quake, Wolfenstein..

    - The most / best game servers run on Linux and a lot (like me) do this for free!! Strong multiplayer internet games -with a Linux client and server) get lot's of support from the community!

So if you're Xfire programmers really can code they go multiplatform.
And .. if you're a real business man with some vision .. look at HP, IBM, Novell, Skype, MySQL (just to mention some Linux frienly companies) and consider if its possible to make some part of Xfire open.

    - Like said before a, yes the market could be 95% (hmm where you got that number from Microzofts ? I just don't think you are right, whatever) but it's also the market where the most stuff is cracked etc.

    - I am a Linux gamer and if Xfire can make a Linux client (what should not be a big problem for good Software Engineers) I'll pay for it, no problem with that!

Does anyone else see the irony in this post?

As for Xfire on Linux, i'm all for it. I'm really trying to get rid of Windows on my PC, but I can't live without Xfire!

There is a xfire-plugin for GAIM, I haven't tried it, and I don't think it supports ingame IM and gametime-counting.

Instead of going by how many PC users use Linux, how about how many Linxu users use XFire (and windows jsut to be able to use it). Supporting Linux would be great because there arent really any great game browsers for Linux yet (easy market to win). Windows sucks; Linux popularity is growing. It would be smart to support it early.

yea to i literaly just instaled ubunto linux(dual os) and i am scrambling around trying to find stuff for linux. i am pretty disapointed in xfire for not working with linux. i realy figured it would. i realy dunno what to say... meh i will be spending most my time on linux now so yea...once you get some linux suport i will be conected more. but if i have to choose between xfire+windows or linux and nor crashing... ^_____^ yea well i hope you realy do see that linux is growing quite popular. it would be a wise marketing descision to suport it. remember that.

You people should leave your armchair knowledge of Linux at home. You're making fools of yourselves. Whatever idiot told the poster before me that Linux won't crash is just that, an idiot. Nowadays, when people use Linux, it's not for any perpous. It's just to be able to say "hey, look at me, I use Linux! I R 3r33t!". And then of course, they retort with "No, I use it because it's stable, fast and more customizable". Bull****.

Linux becoming a desktop OS is far from being accomplished. No matter how "user friendly" they try to make it, it'll still be slightly updated, cryptic, old software with a lack of a userbase, a lack of useful applications for todays user, hence this thread, and a lack of hardware support.

Linux is designed more towards programmers than it is the average user. Unless you know how to, at the VERY least, recompile a kernel, you'll never get along with Linux. Plain and simple.

Ask yourself why you use Linux. And don't kid yourself. I can almost promise you that if you do, you'll end up back on Windows in no time.

from what Ive ehard Mac is linux based and whats about to make me want ot jump off a cliff is that JAMS KT and Xfire arnt mac compatible. And im my situation I cant help having a mac that My grandma gave me cause she upgraded.

Its really stupid how ive seen people say "Oh we are focusing on our PC users" Well thats BS and there are probably other mac and linux users that really wish they had xfire. I really would like xfire but its not mac compatible.

    ~*Sincerly, A angered mob of mac/linux users :P
