Every holiday where you buy something can be viewed as materialistic or consumeristic. It's only sort of ridiculous, 'cause I think holidays are what you make of them.
I still like the Valentimes even though I've never had a significant other. Everything's all pretty and pink. Christmas is even better. I don't know what you'd buy for St. Patrick's Day though, except maybe Guiness, Kilbeggan and corned beef and cabbage.
