I haaaet Steam because of it's very poor client maintenance.
But I'd like to keep my contacts alive.

Solution: Bring the contacts to Xfire!

I don't think this is possible, moreover I doubt steam will let a competitor access its network/features.

Better solution: tell your friends to use XFire.
