I bought my copy off eBay where it was some what cheaper (that is, at Alpha price when Minecraft had already entered its Beta stage). Looks like someone's still selling gift codes.

If you use bukkit, you can host without hamachi/tunngle and not worry about impersonators when in offline-mode. We use xAuth on our server. The legit players get the benefit of custom-skins (or epic shades in my case).
