Take your pick and explain why.
UT2004 because of the never-ending fun with those kickass user created mods, general vastness, and the playerbase. Too many maps too little time.
(And the skill level was a bit higher too, fun for me.)

you can dodge off walls. they just took dodge jump away and made it more grounded
UT2004.
1: The gfx are good enough for me.
2: The gameplay is what makes it.........
3: I like the movement and weapon accuracy how it is.
4: Nothing IMO in UT2004 is consolified like UT3 is.
5: Plenty of people in UT2004 still (June 8th 2009).....
6: There's plenty of people to frag in DM, TDM, and TAM.
TDM? really with UT comp?Originally Posted by slyr007

I like both, i am not a UT player so...every person has they own liking
I like UT2004...for some strange, otherworldly reason, UT3 did not catch on. Maybe it was the blatent, epic failure of a remotely cogent single player storyline, perhaps the over-exaggerated brightness/special effects/weapon detail, or could it be the fact that they COMPLETELY botched the sky at ONS-Torlan...it's solid white.
As for overdone special effects...am I the only one who has a problem with big bright glowing fireballs coming out of the mantas? The link gun's projectiles are almost solid white, and there is very little color gradient. And the redeemer has the most un-creative effect ever: the screen goes solid white.
And don't even get me started about what they did to the vehicles. The Leviathan looks like a piece of sh**, the Raptor is HIDEOUS, the Hellbender's new design is crappy (so are the SPMA and Paladin), and most of the Necris vehicles either look crappy, suck, or both. The Manta's new design rocks...at least they got one thing right. The Goliath wasn't too bad, because it's a tank. You can't mess up a tank. And although the Necris Fury is the ultimate close-support aircraft, the plasma beams don't even travel in a straight line. The Darkwalker is okay I guess, but I expected legs bigger around than toothpicks.
Furthermore, the complexity of UT3 prohibits mods. In UT2004, all you had to do to make a room in a level was grab a cube, type in the size, grab a texture, and hit subtract. Wtf is up with the UT3 editor? Where are all the good static meshes? Everything is excessively complicated. And how about some VTM's to help out? Too much to ask?
The mod diversity and intercompatibility for UT2004 is astounding. You have not lived until you have played a halo elite in ONS-Islandhop with a jetpack and a super amped-up AVRiL that can one-shot-kill a tank. (My avatar is a photoshopped UT2004 elite holding a Fyrian Cannon, Weapons of Evil mod.)
Conversely, I was barely able to find (and then install) the PC version of the UT3 Masterchief mod.
I will not argue...the special effects in UT3 are amazing. But there are so many things that the developers could have done better in UT3. It could have put Halo 3 in the bargain bin if they did it right (death to microsoft for not making Halo 3 for the PC).
UT3: Murphy's law applied to an otherwise awesome game.
No problem exists which cannot be solved by wielding a more powerful weapon.
UTK4 > UT3 because of the difference in the menus alone.
UT3 was the worst I have seen in any game.
And don't get me started on the editor. Even worse than the Siege Editor for Dungeon Siege series. And being worse and/or more overly complicated than THAT takes being utterly Suckitudinous.
Since I like to make maps and will often have to deal with the atrocitous menu that killed the game for me.
One of the few that likes UT3, probably because I never played the previous ones. So I'm going for UT3 :P.
And hoverboards ftw!
